Ummm. No, actually.
I logged in as root, and ran xsane - the results are the same as I've
been getting - it doesn't find the scanner.
Also, in the fstab file /proc is already mounted, and the system isn't
happy about mounting /proc/bus/usb with it's own permissions.
Does this provide any further clues?
