I'm working on a comparsion between free PIC compilers for the 16x84. Note
that I'm the author of one, so some bias is guaranteed. Preliminary
conclusions:
-> if you need ONLY 16x84 target, get HiTech's PIC-LITE (ANSI-C)
-> if you need more targets and are willing to learn a C dialect, get
cc5x-free
-> if you do not mind (or even prefer) a non-C language get Jal
c2c and p2c do not come into the picture due to the primitive register
allocation strategy. SIL is not a serious alternative. Note that even with
an ANSI-C compiler you will have to dive into the pecularities of the PIC
to write efficinet programs.
