the color36 mode should be supported! I will check this with xsane...
Note: if you play around with several different SANE and plustek-module
versions, note that the /etc/sane.d/plustek.conf file has changed, please
verify this and check against the one in the sane-backend sources...
And, yes it is normal, that the system freezes. This has something to
do with active waiting for the scanner. The original Plustek sources
even required a freeze througout the whole scan process. I might be
able to skip the system freeze at the beginning, but I need some
more time to do this ;-)
