Well, that bad behaviour is a known issue, but can't be solved by the driver 
:-(
The problem is, that if the driver has not enough computing time, it is not 
able to follow the scanners' data stream. It also has no possibility with
that old ASIC inside the 4831 to fix this...
The ASIC in general is not suitable for multi-tasking OS (that's why Plustek 
offers NO drivers for NT/2000/XP)
I'd say, that the problem is the new SIS chipset. Maybe the stuff works better
after a BIOS upgrade or after the parport module supports this chipset in 
a better way it now does (initialization !).
You might play around with different settings of the parallelport in your 
BIOS...
