You may want to search the mailing list from about 4-6 weeks ago.
I had the same problem and fixed it and provided a patch for it.
I do not know if it was already added to CVS.

Subject: [nanogui] How to make ttf fonts work?

Hello,

I have a system of Nano-X+NXLib+FLTK. I want to plug .ttf fonts to it. I
have successfully installed freetype 1.3 on nano-x, and configured the
FREETYPE_FONT_DIR variable. When I make a call to XListFonts, it doesn't
return any of the freetype fonts that I copied to FREETYPE_FONT_DIR,
hence
FLTK's Fl::set_font function also fails to initialize any of the fonts.

What am I doing wrong? How do I make FLTK work with ttf fonts?

Thanx
