Thats a good idea.  I would suggest taking the two byte operations from 
fltk-utf8 and putting them into the current FLNX tree.   Put #ifdef UTF8 
and #endif around all the code you add and send in your patch to us.  

We'll modify the configure scripts so you can choose between operations on 1 
byte or 2 byte (i.e. ./configure --with-utf8)
