very small subset of characters, it prints the unicode value that I expect,
but for the rest, it prints out really large numbers (in the 65000 range).

the TTY_Read function) and found that the values being read from /dev/tty
are greatly different between the two systems. A few characters match up,
but only a few.

IIRC, the tables in kbd_ttyscan.c must match the values that
the Linux kernel driver returns in various ctrl/alt/shift combinations;
you might check to make sure that you have the same keymap
loaded in your linux kernel, or you'll have to modify
the tables in kbd_ttyscan.c.
