(Greg, I accidentally responded only to you, here's a re-post for the
list)

What I said above isn't true, Netscape works OK. I thought I'd tried
that before using command line ftp.

No, it might be an Apple Safari bug but I'd need to read over HTTP
specs to be sure.

"ftp://ftp.pixil.org/pub/pixil" doesn't work.
"ftp://ftp.pixil.org/pub/pixil/" does work.

Here's what's up. Using command line FTP using Darwin or FreeBSD to
directly access the link on the pixil.org website I get (using FreeBSD,
nothing is typed other than the command line):

sim% ftp ftp://ftp.pixil.org/pub/pixil
Connected to ftp.linux4.tv.
220 ProFTPD 1.2.8 Server (PIXIL) [66.219.206.4]
331 Anonymous login ok, send your complete email address as your
password.
230 Anonymous access granted, restrictions apply.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
200 Type set to I
250 CWD command successful.
250 CWD command successful.
local: pixil remote: pixil
227 Entering Passive Mode (66,219,206,4,228,244).
550 pixil: Not a regular file
221 Goodbye.

Note that ftp.pixil.org hung up on me because "pixil" wasn't a regular
file.

If I specify "ftp://ftp.pixil.org/pub/pixil/" (with the trailing slash)
it works OK, and I see the directory.

Whatever Apple is using in Safari behind the scenes to do "mount -t
ftp" on the link can't handle the error. Whose fault this is depends
on looking up what an "ftp://" URL means.
