cups is basically a front-end for ghostscript. if you're running linux
on your target, going with just ghostscript may fit your requirements.
I'm going to be facing a similar situation in the next few months
writing drivers for USB printers connected to my 68k RTEMS host via a
cypress CY7C67300.
my current plan is to start with the (amenably licensed) HP code and
strip it down. I'm figuring that support for other printers can be
implemented without running into licensing issues by studying
ghostscript back-ends and doing some reimplementation.
