I've heard this happens sometimes when cross-compiling,
because the convbdf binary needs to be built using the
HOST compiler, not the cross compiler.  IIRC, changing
HOSTCC=gcc in the fonts/Makefile or upper level
Makefile.rules should fix this.  (grep for HOSTCC 
and/or convbdf)
