Somebody sent me a note saying they completed
an Kaffe awt port for nano-X, and it was accepted
into the main kaffe distribution. However, I
wouldn't be surprised if there were still a
few bugs.

Likely the issue needs to be resolved in the kaffe
awt code for nano-X. I would suggest you describe
this problem on the kaffe list and see what people
say needs to be done. I'm here to help you on
nano-X issues if required.
