Hi,
have you ever tried xscanimage?
I'm not sure, why xsane does not work, as scanimage does
(the waste is no waste, these are picture data - try
scanimage -d plustek:/dev/usbscanner > pic.pnm)
So all the stuff looks good, you might enable the backends'
debug output (export SANE_DEBUG_PLUSTEK=12) and compare
the output while starting xsane and scanimage -L
