The SANE versions in general do not rely on a specific kernel.
You can use 1.0.12 on kernel 2.6 you have to make sure, that
the libusb is installed.
It might be, that the kernel you use has USB problems, this seems
to be quite common for the 2.6 series...
What are exactly your problems?
