I'm not sure if this is relevant. On my 9600, I get reasonable scans but
with very fine alternating cyan and magenta lines much like the
right-lower portion of Markus' png.  This occurs on Linux and win98 and
when connected to two different machines.  I have changed cables to no
effect. I regretfully assume it is the 9600's hardware failing and not
any of the drivers.
