You'll have to make sure that the kernel has a fb device compiled in and
also that it is booted with fb enabled (see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb). I use the stock vesa fb, which works
well on my machine. You can tell if fb is enabled at boot time, since
you should see always see a graphical penguin in the upper left corner.
