you might start this discussion again on SANE mailing list.
AFAIK, the upcoming SANE 2.0 Standard defines the usage
of buttons but currently there's no defined way for using them...
You're welcome to start the development there but I think
you first should have a look at the SANE standard.

If you want to check the button states from your EPSON,
we should try and find out which of the misc I/O pins are
defined for input and how they behave while pressing the
button...
